Villa F: A Greek Island Holiday Home With A Difference

If I asked you to imagine a Greek Island holiday home, how would you describe it to me?

You might mention typical Mediterranean whitewashed walls and a spacious and airy interior. Perhaps simple but comfortable furnishings  (ideal for relaxing and getting away from it all!) And no doubt, a view of the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea.

This holiday villa on the Greek Island of Rhodes has all of this. But I bet it isn’t quite what you were imagining …

Villa F is a futuristic looking home. It was designed by architects Hornung and Jacobi Architecture for a couple who wanted a holiday home that also included a separate area for guests.

The villa is situated three metres above a coastal road and bordered by a natural stonewall. At first glance, the architecture might appear to be incongruous with its surroundings. But there is more to this home than first meets the eye.

The design is inspired by the landscape of eroded rocks and washed away shoreline. And the main focus of the home is the breathtaking view of the sea. The walls only serve to frame the context, and they bring the outside in wherever possible.

In the lounge area the interior and exterior merge almost seamlessly. The glass doors can be pulled back so the area becomes part of the outdoor space.

The guest area is next to, but apart from the main home. Perfect for having guests over to stay while still giving everyone some space and privacy. If you notice, it has been cleverly embedded into the landscape and is covered by shady trees.

Climate technology played a big part of the design and architecture of Villa F. Triangular solar panels on the roof provide the building with energy to enable self-sufficient living. A mechanically controlled opening in the roof activates a chimney effect which causes cool air to flow through the building. While cantilevers give shade to the open areas.

Even the stunning infinity pool serves a secondary purpose: the water evaporation provides an additional cooling effect.

The minimalist interior is a modern reinterpretation of the classic Mediterranean style found in many Greek homes.

Integrated storage gives it a streamlined look. And broad window expanses makes it feel airy and spacious.

One of the most striking features is the cantilevered staircase with its delicate balustrade, reminiscent of the strings on an ancient Greek harp. The balustrade continues in an unbroken flow up the stairs and along the walkway to create an option partition  which allows light to stream in through the vast skylight.

In the private open plan sleeping area, the design of the bed draws a modern analogy to traditional Greek carpentry. While the timber beam adds contrast and a rustic touch.

But the highlight has to be the incredible sea view from the window.

A sleek interior filled with space and light, a beautiful landscape, an infinity pool, and that amazing sea view – Villa F is simply a dream holiday home.

It offers a place to relax and rejuvinate away from and uncluttered by the every day.

It reminds me of the pages of a brand new notebook that has never been written in. So full of potential and possibilities for new ideas.

We may not be lucky enough to have a holiday home like this to escape to. But perhaps we all need to channel some of that ‘blank page’ feeling into our own homes? Even if we carve out just one little corner where we can relax, empty our minds and escape from the hectic pace of the outside world. And feel at one with ourselves again.

What do you think?
