How To Make A Rental Property Feel Like Your Home

How to make a rented property feel like your home

Whether for affordability or flexibility, more of us are now choosing to rent our homes.

However, it’s often the case that the decor of your rental property isn’t how you’d like it. And the drab decoration and furnishings can make it feel like you’re walking into a stranger’s flat. But because it’s a rented property, you’re restricted on the changes you can make to it. Yet, it’s going to be your home for now. So how do you enhance and decorate in order to personalise your space?

With a bit of creativity it is possible. Here are some ways to make your rental feel like a home.

Layered rugs to personalise a rental property

Rugs

If the flooring is unsightly or covered by an ugly carpet, layer some rugs on top of it for a contemporary and stylish feel. The good thing is that when you decide to move again, simply roll them up and take them with you to your next home.

Wall panels covered in wallpaper to decorate a rental home

Wall coverings

If your landlord won’t let you paint the walls, you could decorate them with panels of wallpaper stuck to foam or wooden boards. You can either fix them directly to the walls or just lean the panels against them. Alternatively, take inspiration from some luxury hotels and hang diaphanous curtains from the walls for a dreamy and romantic look. This would work especially well in a bedroom.

Storage

Rental properties are often short on storage space, leading to an accumulation of clutter. So introduce plenty of freestanding pieces that you can adapt and move around. Clever storage solutions like a coffee table with bookshelf will save space and help keep your place looking streamlined and organised.

Lighting ideas for a rental home

Lighting

Good lighting can change the whole atmosphere of an interior. Swap out dated lampshades or cover naked bulbs with smart new light shades. And because having only one central source of light can be harsh, introduce some accent and mood lighting around the room. Think about combining electric light with candles – especially in winter – for a warm glow and cosy feel.

Home accessories

Personalise your space with cushions and throws on the sofa; and a considered display of vases and other accessories on shelves and tables around the room. With some photos and a selection of your favourite books added to the mix, the rental will soon begin to feel very much like your home.

Wall art

Add some colour to your walls with striking pieces of art. If the walls are painted, it’s easy to fill those tiny holes with some filler before you move out. To minimise holes in the walls you could use floating picture ledge shelves.

Alternatively, prop art on existing shelves, a mantelpiece or sideboard. Large pieces of art can even be set on the floor, leaning against the wall.

Plants help make a rental into a home

Plants

Some greenery will instantly make an interior look better. And in addition to their aesthetic beauty, plants can also help improve the air quality. A welcome idea, especially if the place feels a bit musty from previous tenants.
