7 Ways to Turn Your Home Into a Happy Haven For Winter

Hygge, throw and candles

Now that the clocks have gone back for winter and it gets dark earlier, it can feel quite gloomy and miserable. And with colder weather setting in, you’ll probably be spending more time indoors.

So here are some ways to brighten up your home and turn it into a happy haven for the winter months.

1) Hygge

Take a lesson from the Scandinavians and bring some Hygge into your home. Take time to savour the little luxuries. Use your favourite mug when you drink a cup of coffee. Wrap yourself is a fresh, fluffy towel when you come out of the shower. Create a warm atmosphere with candles. And further enhance to experience with beautiful scents like citrus, or the relaxing fragrance of lavender.

2) A throw

Invest in a snug throw. It’s the perfect companion for a cosy evening on the sofa while you relax with a gripping box set or a good book. And you can use it as an extra layer of warmth on your bed.

3) Light

Coming home at the end of the day to a dark home can feel quite miserable. Instead, why not get some time switches and set a few side lights to turn on shorty before you get home? That way, there will be a welcoming glow to greet you, when you walk though the door.

4) Plants

Counteract the bleakness of bare trees outside with some lush indoor plants. Greenery or flowering plants around the home will lift your spirits. And you could add some Mediterranean warmth with the introduction of palms or an olive tree.

5) Healthy comfort food

In the winter we feel a greater need to eat warm, comfort food. But when you’ve been out at all day, you might not be in the mood for cooking. A slow cooker could be the answer.

Before you leave in the morning, simply toss in all the ingredients and turn it on. Then, when you get home, you’ll be met by a delicious aroma, and have a hearty and healthy soup or stew already waiting for you.

Entertaining and table decoration

6) Entertain at home

Don’t just hibernate over the winter. Now is a great time to entertain and invite friends over.

Have some fun with it. Experiment with new dishes, take some time to decorate the table. But most important of all, savour time with good fiends and people you love.

Home restyling

7) Restyle your home

Because you’re spending more time at home, it’s a good opportunity to restyle and give your space a fresh new look. Try moving furniture around in a room to see if it works better. Rearrange the displays on your shelves. Even swapping pictures, cushions or rugs can make a difference.

  1. I hate the winter, its so dark and cold. Lighting is crucial for creating a warm, welcoming home. Not just relying on central lights, but lamps lighting up dingy corners and candles too. My dream is to have a log fire :O)
