Home Accessories: How Not To Use Them

Cluttered space and how not to use home accessories

Home accessories can make or break the decor of a room.

Used well, home decor can enhance your interior and transform your space.  However, the opposite is also true.  Here are a few of the pitfalls, and how to avoid them.

Don’t have too many home  accessories on display

It’s not necessary to cover all available surfaces in a room by displaying every single vase, bowl and trinket you possess. The overall effect will just be clutter. Less is more.

Don’t blindly follow fashion
Use the latest trends to inspire you and give you ideas on how to freshen up your space. But don’t just introduce a new style or shade because it’s ‘in’ if you genuinely dislike it. It’s your home – not a room set – so above all, it should be a place where you feel comfortable.

Don’t go over the top with one colour
If there is colour you particularly love, use it to enhance the room with a few well chosen home decor accents or alternatively, paint the walls in your favourite shade and keep the rest of the room a more neutral scheme.

Using the same hue – purple for example – on the walls and as the colour for most of your furniture and accessories can be too overpowering.

Don’t Clash

Avoid using too many different colours or patterns together. The overall look will be one of chaos – unless that’s the result you’re trying to achieve.

Avoid clutter

There are items (paperwork for example) which are sometimes necessary to have, but not particularly attractive to look at. Try to keep them hidden from view in storage boxes or cupboards so that they don’t draw attention away from the home decor you want to display.

Don’t display objects because you feel you have to
At some time or another we’ve all received gifts we don’t like. Don’t feel obligated to keep an object on display if you find it hideous.  If you really must keep the item, store it away and bring it out once or twice when the person who gave you the gift pays a visit.

Don’t take things too seriously
If there is an item that makes you smile whenever you look at it, why not keep it where you can see it? Have home accessories around you that brighten up your mood.
